i have always dreamed of being an activist, but i have never had the guts. i have always preferred to lead and inspire from within. it's safer. and it keeps me out of the spotlight. but today, i took a step toward something i have been wanting to do for a long time.
out my office window is a vacant lot. every day i watch as the winds tear away the exposed topsoil. every day i dream of it green. but not just green, productive. i want it to feed us — me and my fellow employees, our families, our community. so today i sent an email to our director of office and real estate services proposing a community garden for that spot and offering to lead the project if it's something we can get the company behind.
sure, it's just a baby step and my plan may very well be nipped in the bud before it can even send out roots, but the way i see it, if they say yes, i'll get to pursue my dream, and if they say no, it just gives me incentive to fight harder to find another way — here or somewhere else.
